A Duluth elementary school teacher received recognition for her excellence tonight at the annual Gold Star Teacher awards.

Kim Evavold-Bolf won the $5,000 prize. She was chosen out of nine nominees. She teaches at Lakewood Elementary.

Evavold-Bolf says she works to ensure her students are proud of themselves, know they’re special, and are able to learn at their own pace.

Organizers say every nominated teacher is deserving of the award.

“We have a group of volunteers that serve on this election committee, and they go through all those applications and all those letters of recommendation… and they’re charged with making the real difficult decision,” said Holly Sampson, President/CEO of the Duluth-Superior Area Community Foundation.

The Gold Star Teacher Award started 2006 through the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation.

It honors inspirational Duluth Public School teachers for their dedication, skills and hard work.
