Dramatic video shows distracted driver hitting Minnesota police squad

NEW HOPE, MN – Dramatic video released Tuesday shows a distracted driver hitting a Minnesota police officer’s squad car.

The video shows a New Hope squad driving forward through a green light on August 6.

Another car then runs the red light at the same intersection and broadsides the squad, driven by Officer Tony Gust.

The female driver told officers she was grabbing a drink in her vehicle at the time of the crash.

Police cited the woman for failing to stop at a red light.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety released the video, offering it as “a reminder of how dangerous it is to take your eyes off the road.”

“Not two weeks after my accident, I responded to another accident at the same exact interaction for the same exact circumstances,” said Officer Tony Gust. “A distracted driver ran a red light and hit a car. In this case, unfortunately, one person involved did go to the hospital.

Gust said he shared his experience with the drivers involved in that crash.

The Minnesota DPS says one in five crashes in Minnesota over the last five years have been distracted driving-related.
