UW-Superior Foundation to create new scholarship for Native American Students

SUPERIOR, WI– The UW-Superior Foundation has created a new scholarship opportunity to help support Native American Students.

The scholarship, named The Maawanji’idiwin, or “The Place Where We Come Together,” was introduced and named after the newly constructed medicine wheel that was announced back in September.

The scholarship will help provide the financial support for the students enrolled at UWS who need it the most.

It’s considered a community scholarship, which means that it was created by University faculty and staff, along with community members.

The goal is to grow the endowment fund, so its capable of awarding a $1,000 scholarship to a qualified student each year.

UWS sophomore Nell Barri says, “I think it’s great that students do not have to prove they are Native or be enrolled in a federally-recognized tribe to receive it… Native students who are not enrolled in their tribes are often disadvantaged when looking for financial support. This scholarship shows Native students that their identities and cultures are valued here. As a Native student, UWS has been a great choice for me because it has offices and programs like the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), the Native Nations Student Organization (NNSO), and the First Nations Center (FNC) which create a family-like community.”

Contributions to the scholarship may be made online.
