CARLTON, MN-- Hospital beds in the Northland are in short supply and health leaders are urging people to get vaccinated - not just against COVID, but also against the flu.

In Carlton Wednesday it was one stop shopping for both COVID and flu shots.

The pop up drive-through clinic took place from 2:30 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Carlton Transportation Center.

"You really just pull into the garage, they check you in and then you pull up and you get your vaccine. You don't have to get our of your car. It's essentially contactless," said Ali Bachinski, Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for Carlton County.

Health leaders hope people take advantage of the convenience of these clinics and prevent the spread of another illness that could strain our hospitals even further.

"COVID-19 is circulating in our community so as we move into flu season it's really important to protect yourself against respiratory diseases like influenza and the best way to do that is to get your flu shot," said Bachinski.

The clinics are offering the Pfizer and Johnson and Johnson vaccications for COVID but for the flu shot, there are options for anyone.

"We have a wide variety of flu presentations, preservative-free, egg-free, the flu mist," said Kaitlin Thompson, a RN with Carlton County. "So, any vaccine that people are requiring or requesting we can accommodate."

With the flu expected to be more widespread this year, health experts are still asking everyone to do their part.

"It was great last year because we had people wearing masks, social distancing and washing their hands and so if we can continue to do that, those are just other ideas we can protect ourselves against the flu as well," said Bachinski.

At the clinic Wednesday the county gave more than 250 flu shots and 10 COVID vaccines.

No word on how many people recieved both.

If you missed the one Wednesday there will be another drive-through clinic in Barnum Thursday.
