UPDATE: Red Lake man facing first-degree murder for allegedly killing Tribal Police Officer Ryan Bialke

REDBY, MN-- A Red Lake man is facing first-degree murder charges after he shot and killed a tribal officer.

A grand jury recently indicted David Donnell Junior who allegedly shot and killed Officer Ryan Bialke back in July.

According to court documents, officers with the Red Lake Tribal Police Department were conducting a welfare check at Donnell's home at the request of his girlfriend.

Donnell Jr., 28, wouldn't follow the officers' commands and had refused to comply, the officers then breached the door.

Gunfire erupted from inside the residence in the direction of the officers.

Officer Ryan Bialke was struck by gunfire through the front door.

Officer Bialke died on the scene.

Donnell Junior is also facing attempted murder charges for shooting at other officers on the scene.

REDBY, MN -- A Red Lake man has been charged with murder after he allegedly shot and killed a Red Lake Tribal Police Officer Tuesday.

David Brian Donnell, Jr., 28, is being held in the Beltrami County Jail.

According to court documents, officers with the Red Lake Tribal Police Department were conducting a welfare check at Donnell's home at the request of his girlfriend.

She told police she believed Donnell was suicidal.

Five officers responded and found Donnell standing outside on the porch.

They asked Donnell to walk toward him, but instead he went inside the house.

Because Donnell had an active tribal warrant and had refused to comply, the officers breached the door.

Gunfire erupted from inside the residence in the direction of the officers.

Officer Ryan Bialke was struck by gunfire through the front door.

Gunfire continued from inside the house toward the other four officers on the scene.

At one point, an officer returned fire.

Officers then ran into the woods.

Officer Bialke died on the scene.

Shortly after, officers arrested Donnell at a nearby residence.

The FBI was a part of the investigation.

Donnell is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney's office.


An investigation is still underway for the 37-year-old officer that was killed Tuesday while responding to a call for service at a residence on the Red Lake Reservation.

The Minneapolis FBI tweeted Tuesday night their condolences to Officer Ryan Bialke's family.

REDBY, MN -- The FBI is investigating after authorities say a Red Lake Police Officer was shot and killed in the line of duty early Tuesday morning.

According to the FBI's Minneapolis office, Red Lake Police were responding to a call at a home near Redby, MN, east of the Red Lake Indian Reservation, when someone fired at the officer.

The suspect is in custody.

The FBI did not comment on what kind of call police were responding to or what exactly led up to the shooting.

The name of the officer has not been released.

The FBI is investigating.

In an announcement on social media, the Red Lake Tribal Nation said it’s directing all tribal programs and businesses to lower flags to half-staff throughout the week.

Non-essential programs will also be closed Tuesday out of respect for the officer.

“Sincere condolences to family and friends,” the nation’s Facebook post said. “Prayers and strength to the Red Lake Nation during this difficult time.”

The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office, which serves the area, released a statement, saying its officers are deeply saddened by the loss.
