DULUTH, MN. -- For the 7AAA Section Baseball Championship on June 9, at Wade Stadium, it was a match-up between Grand Rapids and Chisago Lakes.

The Grand Rapids Thunderhawks got a great start as they scored two runs in the top of the 1st inning. In the top of the 4th inning, Grand Rapids leads 2-0, a base hit single from Wyatt Holcomb, sends a runner home and they now lead 3-0.

Next play Holcomb steals second, but a over thrown ball gets him to third, and once again, a bad hop sends Holcomb home as the Thunderhawks are fired up with a 4-0 lead.

Grand Rapids gets two more runs that inning and ends the top of the 4th up 6-0.

Stellar defense gets the job done for the Thunderhawks as they get a shut-out win 6-0 over Chisago Lakes. Grand rapids is the 7AAA Section Champions.

"Well it was very special to get a chance to play baseball after not getting to play last year, and the kids just appreciate coming to the ballpark everyday, and to top it off with a section championship is just gravy on everything, said Bill Kinnunen Head Coach for Grand Rapids. "Being able to get to play and then winning the title, and getting to go to the state tournament is huge."

Grand Rapids is heading to states again for the first time since 2018.

"Last year we didn't have the state tournament obviously, or high school baseball, and it really means a lot, to actually be out here this year, playing with the boys, and just having fun with your team, like we always wanted too, now that we are going to state," said Kodi Miller Grand Rapids Senior.

The 7AAA State Tournament starts on June 15 from the Mini Met baseball fields in Jordan.
