SUPERIOR, WI -- Northwest Wisconsin's first mass COVID-19 vaccination clinic opened Tuesday at the Wessman Arena in Superior.

Where the puck would normally drop is now home to the 5th mass vaccination clinic in the state.

Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes said Wisconsin is leading the nation in vaccine distribution.

"We've administered over 3.5 million doses," Barnes said. "Over a third of Wisconsinites have now received at least one dose."

Though hope is on the horizon, Barnes said Wisconsinites are not out of the woods yet.

"And that's why we can't let our guard down, and we can't trip when we are this close to the finish line," he said. "So we need everyone to keep doing the things that we've been doing over the last year to keep ourselves safe, keep our neighbors safe, keep our loved ones safe."

Clinic hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays.

"I am really excited because we are one step closer to beating the virus," Barnes said. "We have to do everything we can to stop the spread. We know the last year has just been filled with so much uncertainty and many times filled with chaos, but I am proud to say that we are one step closer."

The clinic is open to anyone who lives, works, or studies in Wisconsin.

"Every vaccine gets us closer to getting out of the pandemic," Superior Mayor Jim Paine said. "We now have widespread availability. You're going to be able to get that appointment."

Right now, the clinic can give 500 doses each day it is open.

There are stations to check in, receive the shot, and wait for a few minutes so clinic workers can monitor people.

After a person receives the shot, clinic workers will schedule an appointment for their second before they leave.

To combat the rise in COVID-19 cases and variant concerns, Douglas County Public Health Officer Kathy Ronchi urges mask wearing, physical distancing, and hand washing even after being vaccinated.

"When you do all these things together and add vaccination to that mix, that is what is going to stop this spread and stop the virus from changing, allowing vaccination be get effective and, as everyone is saying, get back to life as we would like to see it," Ronchi said.

Right now, the clinic is administering the Pfizer vaccine, but that could change.

The address of Wessman Arena is 2701 Catlin Ave, Superior, WI 54880.
