UPDATE: Pedestrian who helped in 3 vehicle car crash in Grand Lake Township has died

85-year-old Nancy Johnson who was involved in the three-vehicle car crash on Nov. 23 has died, according to her obituary.

The Aurora woman was one of the pedestrians who stopped to help crash victims on the side of Highway 53 and Caribou Lake Road Monday night.

The state patrol says all four pedestrians were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The state patrol says the drivers of the three vehicles involved had non-life threatening injuries.


GRAND LAKE TOWNSHIP, MN-- A 3 vehicle car crash has left 4 people injured late Monday night.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the crash happened just after 5 p.m. Monday at Highway 53 and Caribou Lake Road in Grand Lake Township.

Officials say a Buick was Northbound on Highway 53 when it struck a deer. It then stopped on the right shoulder partially in the right lane.

A 2018 Ram was traveling Northbound on Hwy 53 and struck the Buick after it had stopped.

Two pedestrians were then checking on occupants of the Buick, when a 2020 Ford traveling Northbound on Hwy 53 struck the Buick, causing one of the vehicles to strike the pedestrians.

Nancy Johnson, 85 of Aurora, and William Johnson, 91 of Aurora were taken to Essentia Health in Duluth with life-threatening injuries.

Anna Buchanan, 53 of Duluth, and Donald Buchanan, 21 of Duluth were taken to St. Lukes with life-threatening injuries.

St Louis County, Mayo Clinic Ambulance, Grand Lake Fire and Rescue, Proctor PD, and Hermantown Police all responded.

UPDATE: Northbound Highway 53 has reopened to traffic.

Still no word on a cause or the extent of injuries.

Near Hermantown, MN -- A serious crash has closed northbound Highway 53 north of Pike Lake.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the crash happened around 5:10 p.m. at Highway 53 and Caribou Lake Road in Grand Lake Township.

Multiple agencies remained on scene investigating more than an hour later, closing northbound traffic near Pike Lake with detours in place.

No word yet on how many people or vehicles were involved, or the extent of injuries.
