CLOQUET, MN -- Former Carlton County Attorney Thom Pertler has passed away at the age of 56.
According to his obituary in the Pine Knot New, Pertler died on Monday.
Pertler worked as an attorney for 30 years.
For 23 years, Pertler worked in the Carlton County Attorney's Office, first as an assistant and later as Carlton County Attorney.
He lost a reelection bid in 2019.
The Pine Knot reports Pertler and his wife were in Alabama looking for a winter retirement home when he fell ill this fall.
The Minnesota Supreme Court disbarred Pertler from practicing law in an order filed in September.
The order comes after the Office of Lawyer of Professional Responsibility filed a petition for disciplinary action against Pertler, accusing him of professional misconduct.
The Supreme Court said the misconduct included failure to disclose known police misconduct, failing to implement Brady policy and failing to train staff in the Carlton County Attorney's Office.
Pertler's main priority and focus in life was his family, his obituary read.
