Melissa Kalinoski, 42, Killed in Crash

CROMWELL, MN-- The sister of a woman killed last month in a car crash in Brookston, speaks out about driving under the influence.

You'll recall Melissa Kalinoski of Cromwell was killed when authorities said a Cloquet man crossed over the centerline.

It happened on Highway 2 near Brookston on September 24.

The Minnesota State Patrol reports the man was under the influence of alcohol at the time.

While the man hasn't been charged in this case yet, Minnesota court records show this wouldn't be the first time he's driven under the influence.

He has had four previous DWI convictions in Minnesota between 1986 and 2010.

Kristin Honan, the younger sister to Melissa said, "The fact that he's already had 4-DWIs prior to this, somethings wrong with our state and the laws. There's no possible way that he should have been driving."

Kristin said her sister was spunky, outgoing, and lived a carefree, happy life.

The 42-year-old leaves behind her 15-year-old daughter and a long-time boyfriend. Melissa also survived breast cancer.

Kristin said Melissa was also a wonderful aunt and loved every moment with her family.

"She was a loving mother and a great sister and she was always checking in on our dad all the time, calling him every morning to chat. She was the light. She was like the glue," said the younger sister.

Kristin hopes justice for her sister will be served.

The male driver was injured in the crash. Friday, the hospital staff said he's no longer a patient.

We reached out to Saint Louis County Attorney's Office to see when charges may be filed. They are awaiting results from the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
