Ashland County Board rejects proposed ‘wheel tax’

ASHLAND, WI-- Ashland County residents have dodged a proposed vehicle registration tax.

The "wheel tax" would have charged residents $25 per vehicle to make up for an estimated $430,000 shortfall in next year's county budget.

According to the Ashland Daily Press, county board members decided not to vote on the proposal, citing resident complaints as one of the reasons.

The county will now take $250,000 from savings to fund county operations and borrow $1 million to pay for road projects.

The county is also looking at a resort tax as a funding option.
