DULUTH, Minn. -- For the first time in five months, there is organized high school sports activity in the Northland.

Select sports were permitted to begin organized practices for their fall seasons today. In Minnesota, the MSHSL approved boys/girls soccer, girls tennis, girls swimming and diving, and boys/girls cross country to resume.

In Wisconsin, the WIAA approved boys/girls cross country, girls golf, girls swimming, and girls tennis to resume.

Many Twin Ports area teams took full advantage of the opportunity today, taking a step towards a return to sports.

"Getting ready, having the disinfectant on everything, and doing the heat temperatures with everybody scanning in, to get through that the first time, and now we can just get better at it and it's going to be routine for us this year. I'm just glad the first one is over," said Duluth East boys soccer coach Corey Bachand.

"You know the kids are just so used to being together. You know the social distancing and keeping the six feet, and I think I need shirts made up that say "SIX FEET" you know. It's just one of those things that's going to be the comment every day, a million times."

Both Duluth East and Duluth Denfeld held their first of two tryout days on their respective fields. Each team will play a 10-11 game regular season with the least amount of travel possible, with hopes of a postseason.

"We're missing a lot of big Cities games that we would normally have on the schedule. Missing out on that kind of stings a little bit, but still, we're out here to play. So, happy that we're getting something out of it, you know not getting the full season out of it, but 10 or 11 games in and hopefully playoffs. The kids are excited and you know everybody is happy to be out," said Duluth Denfeld head coach Scott Anderson.

The furthest each team will travel this season is Grand Rapids, who recently installed a new turf field this summer. The Hunters and Greyhounds will meet twice this fall. Once at Duluth East on September 4 at 1:00p.m., followed by a match-up at Public Schools Stadium on September 24 at 7:00p.m.
