DULUTH, MN -- One of Minnesota's largest labor unions is calling for a statewide mandatory mask policy.
AFSCME Council 5 represents more than 43,000 state, county, and city employees across Minnesota.
According to the Minnesota Department of Health, a spike in COVID-19 cases has resulted in more than 800 new cases within a 24-hour period and union leaders say mask-wearing could help strengthen the economy faster.
"We would support this policy and thank Governor Walz for his continued leadership," an AFSCME spokesperson said.
"When we all wear a mask when we are in public we can again reduce the number of positive cases throughout our state and improve public health."
No word on when or if Governor Tim Walz might enact a statewide mask requirement.
