SILVER TOWNSHIP, MN -- Authorities say two women inside a Silver Township home when it exploded are being treated for serious injuries at a Duluth hospital.
According to the Carlton County Sheriff's Office, authorities responded to the home at Korhonen Road, near Kettle River, around 8:53 p.m. Tuesday.
A 75-year-old woman was injured and along with a 52-year-old woman who was, at one point, trapped inside the basement.
Authorities say the 52-year-old was escaped before first responders arrived.
Both women were taken to Moose Lake's Mercy Hospital before they were airlifted to Essentia Health St. Mary’s in Duluth.
The 52-year-old told authorities that the house exploded after she turned on the furnace.
Kettle River's Fire Chief, Kyle Reil, offered advice to those who may be fearful this could happen to them.
"Definitely have your furnace serviced every year to make sure everything is good to go. CO2 monitors are always a good thing to have as well," Reil said.
The exact cause of the explosion and fire is still under investigation, according to the Carlton County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities have not identified the victims.
