HIBBING, MN-- Hoping to be at the forefront of change the Hibbing Police Department has created a new community task force in an effort to combat systematic racism.

It's called Anchoring the Blue Task Force.

"We thought as a police department and a city that we want to be at the forefront of this type of stuff," said Police Chief Steven Estey. "And make sure nothing like Minneapolis happens in our home town."

The task force is made up of residents, educators, social workers, and others.

Those who are on the task force say it'll help make connections within the community.

"I think first and foremost it creates accountability," said task force member Seraphia Gravelle.

"We're hoping that there being so many different hats at the table that we can connect," added Chief Estey.

Hibbing is made up of primarily white residents but Chief Estey said that bringing knowledge to the community is important. "I think there's not a whole lot of education as far as racism comes. Especially in an area like Northern Minnesota."

Police Department officials and members of the task force hope the task force will bring more light to these issues and be a safer place for everyone.

Chief Estey says more concrete plans of when the group will first meet and how often will be made after the holiday weekend.
