Commander Derek Randall tapped to be new Cloquet police chief

CLOQUET, MN -- The Cloquet City Council has signed off on a new police chief.

At their meeting Tuesday night, councilors voted 6-1 to remove the interim tag from Commander Derek Randall.

Randall had been the acting chief for 8 months, and has been with the Cloquet Police Department for nearly 2 decades.

It is unclear when he will officially be sworn-in. but it could happen at the city's next council meeting on June 16th.

Several other candidates were vying for the spot, including Troy Bacon - Current Police Chief in Frankfort, Indiana, and Eric Klang - Current Police Chief in Pequot Lakes, Minnesota

In the end, mayor Roger Maki says Randall proved to be the most viable during his 8 months as the acting chief.

This is the city's 4th chief since 2017.

Ward 5 Councilor Steve Langley was the one dissenting vote.
