Iron Range voters approve Eveleth-Gilbert, Virginia school district consolidation

VIRGINIA, MN -- After a vote Tuesday, Iron Range voters have decided the Eveleth-Gilbert and Virginia school districts will become one.

According to the Virginia Public Schools Facebook page, unofficial results show 77.6% approval in Virginia, and 53.3% in Eveleth-Gilbert. Only a simple majority was needed.

The districts will consolidate on July 1.

Last year, voters approved the districts working together, building a new high school and two elementary schools.

School officials say one district will now rule over the new Rock Ridge High School, Eveleth-Gilbert's pre-k through 6th grade school, and Virginia's pre-k through 6th grade school.

If voters had decided to deny the move, there would have been three separate governing bodies.
