Mellen to receive $1.5M check from Enbridge

line 5

MELLEN, WI-- Enbridge will present a check worth $1.5 million to the city of Mellen during Tuesday night's Common Council meeting.

Enbridge is purchasing a parcel of land from the city in order to reroute Line 5 after the Bad River Band filed a lawsuit against the company to keep the pipeline off their land.

This comes after Ashland County voted to allow Mellen to sell the land to Enbridge in January.

The County sold the 5-acre parcel of land to Mellen for $1 back in 1991 under the condition it was maintained for public use.

According to the agreement, the City of Mellen will pay $500,000 to Ashland County, and the property will remain available for public use.

Enbridge will pay an additional $3.25 million to the city once the relocation takes place.

City officials plan to use the money to fund road repairs, water treatment, school safety, and other projects throughout the city.

Enbridge still needs to acquire several permits before construction can begin. According to Enbridge officials, that process is expected to take about one year.
