SUPERIOR, WI-- Harbors in Bayfield and Superior will see about $2.5 million in funding for maintenance and improvement projects.
Governor Tony Evers announced Friday that Bayfield's Apostle Island Marina and Superior's Fraser Shipyards were among the eight harbors receiving a share of $40.5 million in grant money.
The Apostle Island Marina will receive $2 million to repair and build a breakwater structure that's currently in place along with a dock wall, along with protecting the shoreline and the Apostle Island Ferry.
Frasier Shipyards will receive $500,000 for dry dock safety improvements. According to Evers' office, this is the first part of a $3 million project that will build an additional dry dock to help accommodate larger ships.
“Wisconsin has the unique advantage of being surrounded by water on three sides, with a vital commercial port and harbor system,” Evers said.
“With the 2019-2021 budget, we committed to investing in this critical asset. These grants strengthen the link between our transportation infrastructure and the success of three critical state industries: agriculture, manufacturing, and shipbuilding. Ultimately, it all results in strong communities,” Evers added.
