17 Native American students graduate from ‘Empowerment Class’

CARLTON, MN - Seventeen students graduated Friday morning from a five-week training program for Native Americans.

The purpose of the program is to equip students with needed tools to pursue a career in the building trades.

The course is designed to provide participants with critical core skills needed to assist them in overcoming barriers to successful careers.

Some areas of the curriculum includes OSHA 30, First Aid/CPR, and Minnesota Flagger Certification.

The Empowerment Class was put on by Five Skies Training and Consulting. Five Skies officials say the program is funded by Enbridge, and that future job placement opportunities could be made available for the proposed Line 3 Replacement Project.

Five Skies officials say they also work with area contractors to try and obtain other employment opportunities in construction.

Graduation took place Friday at the Black Bear Casino in Carlton.
