SUPERIOR, WI -- An anonymous $1 million donation to UW-Superior will be used for the Lake Superior Research Institute's new floating classroom and research program.

The gift has kicked off a two-year planning phase, which officials hope eventually lead to re-establishing a floating education and research vessel in Superior.

LSRI says the original vessel, the L.L. Smith Jr., ran from 1978-2012.

According to UWS, LSRI wants to create a program that teaches everyone enrolled about the importance of Lake Superior's resources and heritage through direct experience.

We'll hear from UWS officials tonight on the KBJR 6 News at 5 and 6.
