DULUTH, MN– City officials say Duluth’s Aerial lift bridge has been out of service and stuck in the down position since 6:00 a.m. Monday.

City officials say the operations have temporarily closed due to weight from ice, and have closed the lakeside sidewalk for safety reasons.

According to the city, deicing operations will begin on Tuesday.

One ship has reportedly been affected by the malfunction. That ship was directed to the Superior Front Channel located between Wisconsin Point and Park Point.

Duluth Seaway Port Authority officials say captains may have trouble navigating through the channel because it’s slightly shallower than the Duluth Ship Channel.

In addition, the Superior Front Channel is longer than Duluth’s channel, so costs can be higher due to the additional time required to navigate the channel.

There’s no word on when the lift bridge will be operational again.
