Duluth Schools name Denfeld substitute principal during Sconiers’ leave

DULUTH, MN– Duluth School District officials have announced who will temporarily lead Denfeld High School while the school’s principal is on leave amid allegations.

According to Superintendent Bill Gronseth, Laurie Knapp, a former Duluth East High School principal who retired in 2016, will serve as Denfeld’s substitute principal.

Denfeld principal Tonya Sconiers was put on leave amid allegations that have not been made public.

The law firm representing Sconiers released the following statement, written by Ben Kwan:

“We have been investigating legal claims against Duluth Public Schools on behalf of Principal Sconiers since April.”

The document goes on to say, ” The District placed Principal Sconiers on leave more than six weeks after we first informed the district about our investigation.”

The law firm advised Sconiers not to make any public comments, but did say, “If Principal Sconiers is forced to take legal action, the public will hear much more from her and us.”

Knapp previously served as principal at Duluth East, and had retired from the Duluth School District in June of 2016.
