Deputy, subject identified in officer-involved shooting in Moose Lake

MOOSE LAKE, MN – The man shot by a Carlton County deputy on Monday had pointed a gun at another deputy last week during a traffic stop, according to a criminal complaint.

The officer-involved shooting happened around 4:30 p.m. at the Hillside Terraces Mobile Home Park.

On Wednesday, the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension identified the deputy who discharged his fire arm.

Sgt. Jason Warnygora has been with the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office for 14 years. He’s been placed on standard administrative leave.

The man injured during the incident was identified as Shawn Michael Olthoff, 34,

The BCA said Wednesday there is no body camera nor dash camera video of the incident. There were no weapons recovered at the home.

According to the criminal complaint, another Deputy spotted Olthoff on July 26 at a Kwik Trip in Carlton.

The deputy followed the vehicle and noticed it crossed over the right fog line. That’s when the deputy turned on his lights in order to make a traffic stop.

The deputy saw the rear passenger door open and an individual pointed a gun at him, the complaint stated.

He immediately swerved to the left of the vehicle and turned his patrol vehicle around to face the suspect vehicle.

The complaint states Olthoff ran from the car.

A K9 unit traced a gun holster and cell phone belonging to the suspect, but couldn’t locate him that night.

Olthoff remains at Essentia Health – St. Mary’s Medical Center where he’s being treated for his injuries related to the shooting.
