Ashland crews begin smoke testing on sewer system

ASHLAND, WI — City crews in Ashland are working on a plan they hope will get rid of the overflow problem at the city’s waste water treatment plant.

According to the city, they’ll do a smoke test to find spots where rainwater and other water sources could enter the sewer system, causing backups.

Officials say the white, non-toxic smoke is harmless, and will be blown through sewer pipes.

Neighbors may smell a mild sulfur odor, and see smoke coming from the sewers.

Workers will let neighbors know before starting testing in their neighborhood.
