Superior Street work on track

DULUTH, MN- The second phase of the Superior Street reconstruction is now in it’s second week.

The work currently underway is happening between Lake Avenue and 3rd Avenue East.

With last week’s snow and this week’s rain, you would think the weather would have pushed the project back. But, project leaders say they only missed a few days of work and are still on track.

Crews were on site Thursday to remove pavement, which they expect to complete by the end of the week. Once that’s complete, crews say they’ll move on to some temporary water main and retaining wall work.

The project is still in the early stages, and officials say that the road closures currently will be status quo until the end of June.

Superior Street project manager Duncan Schwenson says the project is ahead of the game compared to where they were last year.

“It’s kind of the same work on different blocks we’re removing pavement and everything. Like I said I think Northland learned that the jackhammer that they had for pavement removal that they had out here a few days later that they had last year, They had out right away. I think that’s made things faster and they had an entire extra excavator removing pavement this year then they had last year. So it’s going better than it did to start out with last year and this year,” said Schwenson.

Schwenson said they also have an extra crew on hand for phase 2. He thanked the community for their patience and adjusting to all the traffic detours and closures.
