DULUTH, MN — A Duluth native who was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously will have his original medal on display at the St. Louis County Historical Society’s Veteran’s Memorial Hall.
Marine Maj. Henry Courtney Jr. was awarded the medal for his actions during the Battle of Okinawa during World War II.
Courtney’s family has been fighting to replace the replica currently on display at the Veterans Memorial Hall with the original, located in Pennsylvania.
The original medal was first donated to the Freedoms Foundation in 1980 by Major Courtney’s sister, Elizabeth Courtney Bean.
Family members say they first requested to have it transferred to Duluth in 2014, but the Freedoms Foundation and the family weren’t able to come to an agreement until now.
The Freedoms Foundation will be reaching out to the Historical Society to work through the details.
