UPDATE: Closs to be reunited with family Friday afternoon, second briefing expected at 4 p.m.

UPDATE– KBJR 6 has learned kidnapped teen Jayme Closs had escaped before being found Thursday afternoon in the Town of Gordon, where a woman walking her dog stumbled across the 13-year-old girl.

According to the Associated Press, Jeanne Nutter says her many years as a social worker in child protection helped her keep Jayme Closs calm as they sought help.

Nutter says Jayme had walked away from a cabin not far from her place where she had been held. Nutter says her goal was to get Jayme to a safe place where the police could be called, so they went to a neighbor’s house.

FBI Special Agent Justin Tolomeo said during a Friday morning news conference that this was a very challenging case, and was looking for a huge break.

In addition, Attorney General Josh Kaul also spoke at the conference, saying his group will continue to provide assistant with this case as needed.

Jake Patterson, 21, was arrested in connection with the case, and authorities say a criminal complaint should be expected by next week.

When asked if the Barron School District will be holding a celebration, Superintendent Diane Tremblay said “You better believe it!”

A second briefing on the case is expected at 4 p.m. on Friday.

KBJR 6 will stream the conference both on-air, and online.

We will continue to update this story throughout the day, and will have team coverage at 5, 6 and 10.

UPDATE: Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said he “couldn’t thank” people enough for their efforts in bringing Jayme Closs home.

Fitzgerald made his comments Friday morning during a news conference in Barron.

He thanked Jayme for her courage, her family, law enforcement, school, and community. “This has been an awesome day.”

Dozens of law enforcement officers and volunteers helped with the search for Jayme since her disappearance October 15.

He also gave more information on the suspect who was arrested in connection with the case.

Fitzgerald said that 21-year-old Jake Thomas Patterson is currently in the Barron County Jail on three charges-Two counts of First Degree Intentional Homicide in the deaths of Jayme’s parents, James and Denise Closs, as well as one count of Kidnapping.

Charges against Patterson will likely get filed next week according to the Barron County District Attorney.

Patterson was arrested in Douglas County after a traffic stop minutes after a 9-1-1 call that said Jayme was found. Douglas County Sheriff Thomas Dalbec said Patterson was taken into custody down the road from the residence. He said the stop occurred after patrol sergeants found the vehicle that matched the description of the suspect.

Fitzgerald said that Patterson intentionally did what he did. “I can tell you that the subject planned his actions, and took many proactive steps to hide his identity from law enforcement and the general public.”

Patterson had no criminal history in Wisconsin according to Fitzgerald.

He also said that Gordon was not on investigators’ radar during the search for Jayme.

She underwent a medical and mental evaulation Friday morning. Following questioning from law enforcement, she’ll be reunited with family members. Fitzgerald said that would likely happen early Friday afternoon.

“Tears and lots of hugs,” from the family, said Fitzgerald, after they were notified Jayme was found alive and safe.
