DULUTH,MN – UMD freshman forward Gabbie Hughes was named the WCHA’s Forward of the Week. Hughes finished with three goals and two assists, five points in a 4-3 overtime loss to #2 Minnesota last Saturday. The Lino Lakes native leads the Bulldogs with 1 point per game average. She is also the 4th among all NCAA rookies with that stat.
UMD Assistant Coach Laura Bellamy says she’s quite happy with Hughes and her progress this season.
“It’s pretty exciting to see Hughie and Skinner both get their first and more to come I think. You’ll see more confident play from this weekend, I think we all will. It can’t hurt, to have more people on the score sheet, it is always a good thing. The more she is having fun, the better off she is going to be, to put up five points in two games is pretty impressive. She finds the dirty areas and she is willing to go there. As long as she continues to get to that spot, I think she will continue to put pucks away, which she loves to do.” said Bellamy.
UMD will travel to Bemidji State on Friday for a two game series. Game one will get going at 3:07 p.m.
