DULUTH,MN – The UMD men’s hockey team is back on the ice after going 1-1 in last week’s Desert Hockey Classic. The Bulldogs will start the second half of the season with an exhibition game against the United States Under 18 team.
Associate Head Coach Jason Herter continues to lead the Bulldogs while Head Coach Scott Sandelin is away coaching in the 2019 IIHF World Juniors Championship. Herter says the U-18 team has nothing to lose and it will be a good test for UMD. Team USA has gained some attention after their recent win over now top ranked st. Cloud state.
“You know, they’re 6-7 against some pretty good college hockey programs, and they’re averaging just under 4 goals a game. Their penalty kill is 86 percent, and they have nothing to lose. They think offense at all times, and watching video with the boys this morning, they don’t even have to control the puck and sometimes they’ve got 4 guys with their skates pointed the opposite direction thinking offense.” said Herter.
“If they’re thinking offense the whole time, we just need to be a little bit more defensive minded the whole time, so that’s the only little adjustment that it takes compared to other teams around the league.” said Junior Defenseman Jarod Hilderman.
UMD (11-5-2) will play Team USA U-18 on Saturday at 7:07 p.m.
