Wednesday marks 11 years since I-35 W bridge collapse

Eleven years ago Wednesday, tragedy struck along I-35 in Minneapolis when the 35 W Bridge over the Mississippi River collapsed and killed more than a dozen people.

During the evening rush hour on August 1, 2007, the eight-lane bridge collapsed, killing 13 and injuring 145 people, many of them seriously.

National Transportation Safety Board officials cited a design flaw as the likely cause of the collapse, along with the weight of heavy traffic.

A fast-tracked replacement bridge opened less than 14 months later.
