UPDATE: Small explosion sparks fire at Duluth’s Motel 6

DULUTH, MN– Duluth Fire officials say no one was injured when a small explosion sparked a fire at the Motel 6 in the city’s Lincoln Park neighborhood Friday morning.

According to Johnathon Otis, Duluth’s Deputy Fire Marshal, people inside the motel had to evacuate as crews responded to the area near the motel’s laundry facility.

Our KBJR 6 crew on scene reports there were no visible flames, but smoke could be seen coming from the building.

Fire officials say as of Friday afternoon, they don’t have an official cause of the fire, but they believe it may have sparked from utilities in the laundry facility.

They said most of the fire was smoldering contained to structural elements. Firefighters described how they handle that kind of situation.

“They actually open up the walls and the ceilings, and they’re checking for extension of the fire,” Otis said. “They want to make sure there’s no fire burning in a concealed space that would either could rekindle at another time or that could start building without our firefighters knowledge.”

Fire officials say about 25 rooms were set to check out of the motel Friday morning.

No word at this time how much damage was caused.
